Spelling Bee Final

On Thursday 30th March, three of our Year 7 students (Maisey Brown, Evie Halsall and Erin Murray) travelled to Trinity Church of England High School in Manchester to compete in the North West Regional Final of the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee 2017.

Due to the sheer number of students taking part in the competition from schools right across the North West, all competitors were divided into groups of around 30 students upon arrival for the First Round, to determine the top four spellers that would then move on to the second round to compete for a place in the National Final.

During this First Round, contestants had one minute to accurately say and spell out as many French or Spanish words as they could in target language and from memory.

Not only did our students have to learn 150 words in preparation for the competition, but they each had to compete in front of a panel of native speaker judges and verifiers in a classroom full of spectators! This was a daunting prospect for all contestants, but our three students from Tarporley rose to the challenge and performed exceptionally well, impressing the judges and their audience!

When it came to announcing the top four spellers from each language group, Maisey Brown’s name was called out for Spanish, and she went on to compete in the second round of the competition against even tougher competitors and an even bigger crowd! Maisey, once again, performed brilliantly under pressure, coming fourth overall and thus progressing to the National Final of the Spelling Bee, which will be held in Cambridge in July.

We are extremely proud of the incredible achievements of all three of our students, and we wish Maisey the very best of luck for the final stage of the competition!

Next year, as part of their role as MFL Lead Learners, Maisey, Evie and Erin intend to help promote the Spelling Bee to our next cohort of Year 7 students, and guide them through the competition.
